New Partnership Initiative to Combat Hunger in Newhallville, New Haven

CSK of New Haven Church Outside

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Haven, CT – March 31, 2024 – The VILLEGE, the Community Soup Kitchen of New Haven (CSK), and Mount Calvary Outreach Center are proud to announce a new partnership initiative aimed at consolidating food distribution efforts and expanding services to the community of Newhallville in the City of New Haven.

Yancey Horton, founder of The VILLEGE, has been dedicated to serving the people of Newhallville for the past decade, providing meals and access to essential resources from multiple locations within the neighborhood. Partnering with CSK since early 2023, The VILLEGE has been able to distribute an additional 100 meals per week to those in need.

Mount Calvary Deliverance Tabernacle has acquired a space at 5 Hazel Street with the intention of establishing a community outreach center. This building, currently utilized by parishioners on Wednesday nights, presents an opportunity to expand outreach efforts during daylight hours.

The partnership’s goals are clear: to consolidate food distribution at a single location, increase meal supplies, and enhance oversight of food handling and management with proper licenses and food service structures in place. CSK, committed to its mission of feeding the hungry in New Haven County, sees this collaboration as a significant opportunity to continue the work that the organization has been doing over almost fifty years of continuous operation.

Meals will now be served from the satellite CSK location at 5 Hazel Street, managed by Yancey Horton with support from Mount Calvary Outreach Center and CSK staff. Operating on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, the location will store cold food on-site and provide a microwave for warming meals as needed. External signage will notify the community of meal availability.

Contributions from each partner are crucial to the success of the initiative. The VILLEGE will oversee location management and distribution relationships, while CSK will provide employment services, equipment, food supplies, and delivery logistics. Mount Calvary Outreach Center will offer the space and community engagement efforts.

With a target start date of May 1, the partners are committed to working together to address hunger in Newhallville.

“We are honored to join forces with The VILLEGE and Mount Calvary Outreach Center to expand our impact in Newhallville,” said Winston Sutherland, Director of Operations for CSK. “This partnership is an example of our collective commitment to serving those in need and builds on a fifty-year history of sticking to our mission, which is to feed the hungry, no matter the circumstances.”
