FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hamden, CT – March 31, 2024 – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, Tau Xi Omega Chapter (TXO), and the Community Soup Kitchen of New Haven (CSK) are proud to announce a formalized partnership aimed at addressing childhood hunger in the Greater New Haven community.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® (AKA) has long been a leader in social action, with a legacy dating back to its founding in 1908 at Howard University. Under the leadership of President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed, AKA has made childhood hunger a priority through its Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (AKA CHIPP™) program. The Tau Xi Omega Chapter (TXO) has taken up the mantle, working with local schools to provide essential meals to at-risk food-insecure students.

The Community Soup Kitchen of New Haven, dedicated to serving the hungry regardless of circumstances, has been informally supporting the AKA CHIPP™ program since 2023. Now, CSK seeks to expand and formalize its partnership with AKA to help TXO meet its goal of serving 65 children per week.

The partnership aims to streamline operations and increase efficiency in delivering AKA CHIPP™ meals to students at the Helen Street School in Hamden. CSK will supply non-perishable food items for up to 65 AKA CHIPP™ meal kits each week, while TXO members will coordinate packing sessions at CSK’s location. CSK staff will handle transportation and storage, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations.

“At CSK, we see this partnership as an opportunity to further our mission of serving the hungry in New Haven County,” said Winston Sutherland, CSK Director of Operations. “By collaborating with Tau Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, we can continue doing the work we’ve been proud to do as an organization for almost fifty years, and make a meaningful impact on childhood hunger in our community.”

The success of the partnership will be measured by TXO’s ability to meet the program’s requirements and serve 65 children per week, alongside CSK’s compliance with food safety standards. Together, the organizations aim to serve up to 7,000 meals over the remainder of the year.

“We are excited to formalize our partnership with CSK and work together to address childhood hunger,” said Sade Heard, representing TXO. “By combining our resources and expertise, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of children in Hamden.”
